Longhorn turns network users into doctors (WinHEC)
The upcoming version of Windows will contain a feature that helps users to troubleshoot their networks. The application, previewed at WinHEC, gives a graphical presentation of your network and will indicate any problems (see picture below). The official name for this is Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD).
Many users will find LLTD a useful technology, but it's also sad that we need it to administer our networks. Acutually, that we need to adminster out networks to begin with.
This isn't something that we can blame on Microsoft, but instead of LLTD, wouldn't users prefer to see that their networks just worked?

Looks like you never have logged in a AD server to query MSQL server! You are thinking in something impossible to happen

Ahh.. I can see the leigons of system administrators and tech support people collectivly groaning at the thought of users "helping" them to do their jobs...

What? You mean like on OS X?

RE: You are thinking in something impossible to happen.
I know - I can be kind of a an idealist dreamer. Some day I hope that computers will do what I want them to do, not require me to do things as they see fit.
But if you don't reach for the sky, you will never get even close ;-)
RE: What? You mean like on OS X?
Yeah. Sort of. that would be a great first step.
But this isn't entirely in MSFT's hands. They'll still have to work with the device manufacturers. Try entering a WEP key on your Linksys/Belkin/Netgear media adapter for instance... How's that for ease of use?

the home topology stuff is actually quite ineresting. Unfortunately Dennis Morgan ***did unethical things to*** another guy to get credit for the expected LH network diagnostics stuff.
