Danish jihad moves online

Muslim hackers have launched a spontaneous online assault against Danish websites, causing a slew of defacements.

The riot revolves around the decision by the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten to publish twelve cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed in an attempt to spark a discussion about the role of Islam in a Western society and to underscore the freedom of press. It further snowballed after other European newspapers copied the cartoons.

To Muslims the cartoons were degrading, as their religion prohibits any graphical representations of Mohammed or Allah.

Knowingly violating a religious commandment by depicting the prophet is asking for trouble.

But then, most Westerners have reached a boiling point when it comes to their tolerance towards Muslims. For years they have watched them practice their flag burning skills without ever worrying about how that makes the average American or Brit feel. For years some of them have frequented mosques where their imams would tell them that any non-muslim should be killed. Respect has to come from both sides, they argue, and Muslims have used up their credit.

The outrage furthermore is orchestrated. The cartoons were published back in September, but somehow only now are causing uproar. Muslim clerks were so eager to exploit this situation that they added three highly offensive cartoons to the twelve originally published, and then went on a mission to "inform" Muslim scholars in the Middle East about the situation in the Middle East. The three extras were far more obscene, depicting Mohammed with a pig's snout, labelling him a paedophile, and showing a praying Muslim being raped by a dog.

If this were just about 12 libellous cartoons, Islam could have made a righteous claim at being discriminated. But there are other forces at work here that seek to exploit the situation for political gain. If you join that battle, you allow yourself to be used, regardless of the side that you're on.
