Get a virus? Throw out your desktop (but not your computer)
Virtualization technology could make for more secure computers, Dell CTO Kevin Kettler said in a keynote presentation this morning at Linuxworld in Boston.
Old idea, you could argue. Actually, virtualization originally was supposed to be the core technology behind Microsoft's Next Generation Secure Computing Base (NGSCB) initiative which has been largely pushed to be background.
But Kettler's vision goes far beyond security. If every application runs a separate virtual system, that system can be tailored towards that application: a gaming virtual machine can run a special operating system that emphasises multi media and fast graphics. A media service machine could feature highly stable software that receives a guaranteed supply of computing power.
There are some obstacles that need clearing, but virtualization has some certain potential on the desktop, and as Kettler argues, could give Linux a major boost.
