Negroponte kicks of OLPC day at Red Hat Summit
Friday turned out to be One Laptop Per Child day at the Red Hat Summit here in Nashville.
Nicholas Negroponte delivered a keynote on the project that aims to provide low cost laptop computers to children in developing nations. His presentation was largely the same as the one that I saw at Linuxworld in Boston earlier this year, but it's still good to see how well this topic resonates with the open source crowd.
But there was a large difference in that the project last week received a first working prototype. In a session following Negroponte's keynote, Red Hat's Christopher Blizzard showed off the prototype for everyone to play around with – and later that day gave us a private demonstration of which we shot a video.
The $100 laptop is real, and at the current rate is set to give Microsoft and Intel a run for their money.

The real thing

This one is running Fedora, but the user interface is likely to change.
