HP plugs a leak, creates a riot

Fed up with the constant information leaks from its board of directors, HP chairperson Patricia Dunn decided to hire a private investigator and plug the leak. The contractor found the leak all right, in the person of board member George A. Keyworth II, but in doing so violated a few laws.

As it turned out, the investigator obtained phone records from reporters for publications such as the Wall Street Journal and CNet by posing as the account holder, and now HP is in the hot seat.

The printer and computer maker is "fully cooperating" with authorities.

But the true problem here is how easy it was for an outsider to pose as an account holder and commit what is essentially identity fraud. No doubt the HP case is just the tip of the iceberg where the company has the decency to come clean. Most other cases will probably stay unnoticed.
